Although meta tags are not use by most new search engines (mainly google), several popular engines still use them! Here is a list of several important search engines. Here is an example meta tag code I would use for GFXVoid. Insert between <head> and </head>
Code:
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="tutorials, photoshop, cinema 4d">
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Great site with hundreds of tutorials">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Language" CONTENT="EN">
<META NAME="author" CONTENT="Void Network">
<META NAME="revisit-after" CONTENT="2 days">
<META NAME="copyright" CONTENT="(C) 2004-2005 Void Network and GFXVoid.com">
<META NAME="robots" CONTENT="FOLLOW,INDEX">
META NAME="keywords": Keywords you want for search engines.
META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Language" CONTENT="EN": Showing that your site is in English.
META NAME="author": Showing the author of the site, usually a name or email address.
META NAME="revisit-after": Time you want bots to revist your site after to index content in their search engine.
META NAME="copyright": A short copyright statement.
META NAME="robots" CONTENT="FOLLOW,INDEX": Tells bots to follow hyperlinks and index the pages it follows.

They physically read the content of the page, picking up keywords throughout the page (thats just one of hundreds of components google uses to calculate page rank)

clever Google!
so we had better have the right words to pull in the audience we seek in the web page itself!
good information to know

tacoX, I thought of a question you might have the answer to
if you have commented out text in the page, will the engine pick that up too?

What do you mean by commented? Text inside the code thats hidden from viewing you mean?

yes - will search engines still read and include that text?
-
It depends. I, personally, shy away from using that. I know people cheat by doing that sometimes. I'd just avoid the whole concept of that though.
Correction - google does read the description meta tag, if the content of the page is not suitable.
-
yeah, you are right - I was just reading that search engines don't like tricks, and will treat your page like it's spam if it recognizes any tricks, like link farms and such.
on the submit-it web site, they explained that you need at least 200 words that help describe your pages (on each page).
