if you really want to cut images and characters out properly, seriously there is no fast easy point and click way to do it - use the Polygonal Lasso Tool.
this is not entirely easy to explain in words alone but here goes:

You zoom in a little to the image, then with the Polygonal Lasso Tool , click around the image you're after, at each point little anchor-handles are created - so you'll know you got the correct tool and trace around the image you'll see while doing this a regular while-grey line then when you close the selection the jaggy-wavey line appears - if you make a mistake during the tracing (eg clicked out too far) hit the 'backspace' or 'del' key to bring you back to the previous handle. Take your time, the more time you spend doing this the cleaner the edge.
This is by far the easiest way yet the best way (althou time consuming the more complicate the image is) to cut out renders or character from another image.
If that doesn't explain it, PM me and I'll walk you thru it in more detail.
