it doesn't look real. you can use photos as textures insted making them with bevel. and i don't like the shadows on the bigges planet, i dont know, it just doesn't look real :P.
You need stars instead grain. The light on the sun ain't white :P use orange and yellow instead.

besides nice starting man

Dude, to simply make stars... <Open a new document<inRGB mode

<At 72dpi<Press "d"(to make your foreground color black)<Press

Alt+Backspace(MAC:Option=Delete)<Filter<Noise<<Add Noise<40%

<Gaussian<Check Monochromatic<OK<Filter<Blur<Gaussian Blur

<Radius .5<OK<The Image Menu<Adjustment<Threshold<Drag the bar

to the left till the stars come out<OK<Control=F(Mac:Command=F) to

make the stars look more real. And there you have it! stars!! ^,^
It's actually a simple effect.

i dont like using pre made images tbh, i like to be original, and u cant do that with copy+paste. the shadows on the near planet are a bit funkey, i'm trying to correct them a bit atm, but its a bit complecated due to all the layer and effects i've used to create it, also im still working on the stars in the bg and the sun. btw, the sun can be white if your close to or far enough to it. its like 1 giant flashbang

i havnt quite finished with them yet. im trying to get the transition of them being too dim due to the star, and being far enough away from the sun to be visible first. i'll do all the fancy stuff later

thx for the comments, i'll try to improve it based on your comments

For a first, it's a nice concept, but not too well executed. The texture of the planets need some improvment. I think the piece as a whole seems to be a bit bland. Looks for some tutorials on planets and space art so you can get the feel and flow of how planets work.

As for the stars, you can sometimes use this tutorial:
http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/tuts_ar...star_field.html

That tutorial will teach you how to make stars, but those types of stars only "flow" with certain types of pieces. Sometimes, stars need to be simple depending on the type of piece you're making. You'll get it soon.

Rabieshund, a member here at the void, will be able to help you better on space art than I can so you can either wait for him to post or just PM him.
