yeah illegal is right, try and avoid getting into a constant sig making routine, if you want to do like uber pro graphics. If your aim is to make uber leet siggehz0r, then you should check out the signitures and avatars section, look at the critique from others, also check the signitures tutorials and many other tutorials which gfxvoid has to offer.
also try:

i agree to an extent; starting off on sigs is a good way to get into graphics, but you should never ONLY make sigs, becase you will not be able to express yourself, which is what its all about. move onto some larger pieces when you feel you get the hang of the basics.
-
Or start out with shitty filter peices, s'generally what most people do. Then they join a forum and see all the 'cool sigs' and want to do them instead because they're quick, use other people's stock's and require little work.
Make a few signatures. Only when you need them.
Basically you want to be trying different methods of doing things, just to get to know the interface
-
The best image signatures I have ever seen have been simply sized down portions of larger pieces, used as an example of the height of a certain artist's prowess in their style. These are commonly seen on "pro" forums such as evokeone and depthcore. I personally don't like image signatures, but that's just me.

I don't mind sigantures...(images), persay. I like when people actually use something meaningfull, or funny. Not just some dragon render with a BG...
