Photoshop 1-CS2 are simply versions. If you want the best in quality and options then go with cs2, obviously.

I have Photoshop CS....of course that was all i could get at the time, and its fine for my caveman skills with sigs

Just to clear things up. Having a later version of Photoshop doesn't make you better in any way. It's like playing with a dearer football. Doesn't make you better. But if I were you I would still go with CS2 because having the latest version gives the most options - and it won't get unmorden for a while.
But, for just making avatars and signatures, I can't say it matters. I myself use Photoshop CS for everything. I may upgrade when CS4 comes out or something.
I own a illegal version of CS2 though, just in case. But it's not in swedish, as my CS version, so it feels stupid to use it, if I'm not doing HDR images or whatever.

if you've got the budget go for cs2
otherwise go for cs, its cheaper, and its almost exactly the same as cs2
then again, if your going illegal, just go for cs2

I would go with CS2 it works fine. But so does CS and all other versions of Photoshop.
