Gimp is a mighty fine program to startoff with, that will teach you how to balance sigs.
If you dont want to buy PS CS2 or 3, Than I suggest getting PS Elements, which I believe goes upto 5.
I was using PS Elements 3 for a LOOOOONG time.

Hey hey, i registered here when i first started gimp haha. But im back, yes i have photoshop now *legally* and ive made much better sigs than that 50 cent surgeon crap haha
