consider it like writing a paper for school. If you read a book or 10 books and then write a paper based on your own thoughts derived from the aforementioned material, then the paper is yours and requires no citing. If you take an excerpt directly from the encyclopedia and only change a few words and/or add a paragraph, then you need to reference the source.
It's not a rule, but a common courtesy and a strong step toward keeping a legitimate image.
