How do I make my renders cleaner?

I'm really not sure how to word this. When I have a picture and I want to cut an object out from that picture and place it onto a different project, my render seems to be jagged around the edges on the object.....I tried using the feather option when using the lasso tool, but that makes the edges too soft. When I use the magic wand, the edges are too rough. Can someone give me some tips on how to make cleaner looking cuts for my render?

Use the pentool, thats the way to get nice egdes and also i believe there is some render tutorials on renderplanet
