I usually brush 2-3 layers and then add color. After that I mess with Brightness/Contrast, Levels, and Curves. I usually go for a balanced look without too much black or too much white. Just remember that a render can cover any bad spots so your background doesn't have to be perfect.

I usually start with a layer filled with black then alternate layers of white and black brushing. Then add in your render, feather it by 20 pixels and add a layer mask. Or slighly erase the edges and even use the burn & smudge tools in moderation to get the right feel. Add a color balance or 2 or 3 with cloud filters to get multi-colors. That's just one way I do it.
