following this tutorial exactly, different outcome

im following this tutorial at http://ningen.nattoli.net/tutorials/...lisman_01.html basically to make one but a transmutation circle from the t.v. show Full Metal Alchemist. im at step 4 where i have to merge the two layers, but when i do that nothing happens. is this because that tutorial is for photoshop 7? im using photoshop cs

ctrl+e to merge layers in CS

Layer > Merge Down is th exact some as ctrl e. Sometimes you need to deselect whatever your using, grab the mouse pointer tool, then try . Check if the layer can be rasterized, if possible, do it.

i know how to merge layers. but like in the tutorial, the picture changes. and when i merge layers, it does absolutly nothing to the picture. like i duplicate the image and make one w/4.0 guassian blur, then merge the two layers. but the picture stays the same as before i did the gaussian blur. hope this makes sense
