Do you think it is less creative and noobish if you use someone elses brushes?

I dont think its totally noobish, but the sig you made with someone else's brushes just isnt 100% yours then.

yea im agreed but i think sometimes it might help just to muck around with brushes just to get the feel of photoshop back if u get me. I mean its all well and good if u can open photoshop everyday and keep up to date but i find sometimes mayb just using some of my old brushes that i made helps me to sort of "thought shower" (lol). I think wen u use other peoples brushes it takes away the creativity to an extent but i wud say its good for people to start with because they can see what they can acheive wen they learn to create their own.

In my opinion, brushes take away your creativity in a sense, and that limits you from doing your own work. Sure it helps you out in the beginning, but you should really start working by yourself once you really get a solid grasp on photoshop.

I can't stand when people stamp on brushes, and then others comment on how cool the background is.

My thoughts on others brushes are they are there to be used. They are posted to be used, whats the use of an entire section of brushes on sites like da if the use of them is discouraged. I understand the whole arguement of originality and such, and thats a valid point. imo using others brushes for "enhancements" and things of that nature are completely fine, but when their entire bg is just brushing then they lose their appeal. if someone else's brush fits into your sig i say use it.

I'll be more in depth about this later on, but I'm not a big fan of using anything but defaults. Even making your own brushes, it just.. it takes the art out of doing this stuff. The easier it becomes to make something, the less artistic it is. There should always be a challenge in making something artistic, or else nobody is an artist anymore because everybody is an artist.

It's fine if you're just starting out, becaues you don't know better. but once you get a knowledge of the tools, it's pathetic if you don't use your own brushes.

Agreed. It's unoriginal and boring as hell. If you're new to it all, then whatever.

Custom brushes are made by generous people to be used by others, so you might aswell use them if you think they'll benefit your piece. But obviously as many have said before you can hardly say its your own piece if they arent your own, but you can however, say it is your own arrangement - you might not think it but arranging graphics and cropping images is an artform in its own right, it takes quite an artistic eye to make the best possible selection in an image for the use in your piece. The average sig is best considered artistically as a colláge. hence why those who make sigs, and use brushes are generally referred to as designers as apposed to artists, they use the materials available to them to create something that has a function
