PS Error With Text

Ok I've been making some graphics using a font for along time now, with no trouble. Yet tonight I open up Photoshop and I try to duplicate the text effect that I have many times now, but before I even get to the effects I notice my text size is horribly large.

NO...I am not zoomed in. There must have been some preference change that I'm unaware of.

Wait...I figured it out, the Resolution under image size was different.

Wth does that have to do with anything? Why does increasing the resolution but not actual size of the image affect the size of the text?

Okay this is a pretty common problem actually. I'll try to explain.

Everyone (at least most of you should) knows that when you're talking about pixels you're talking about a grid of little individually colored rectangles. And when you set your resolution at say 72dpi, you're saying there will be 72 pixels in every square inch of the printed page. If it's 300dpi there's three hundred pixels for every printed square inch. Now text is measured in point's (pt), point sizes are based off your final printed image. 72pt = 1in tall. Soooo, when you lower your resolution the size of same point font will appear smaller on your screen, even though it's the same size when printed... make sense? A higher resolution will make the font look larger on the screen, but it will still print at the same size. Follow? If not...oh well, I haven't slept today and that's the best I could do on short notice, sorry.
