On Thursday I'll be purchasing my new computer.

    Selected Specs:
    AMD 64 +3200 @ 2.0 GHz (a little low, but a lot better than the P3 533 I'm on now)
    250 Gig HD
    1 Gig DDR Ram
ATI Radeon X300se 128mb grpahic card (I'll probably upgrade later on, for now this is good enough)
    ect.

I'm paying $1000 Canadian for this. I'm getting a 17" BenQ LCD Flat Screen Monitor, 500:1 Contrast ratio, Analog input (i would rather digital, but that be an extra $120...so i can settle), 12ms frame rate. Paying $280 for the monitor after rebate..

So overall I'm paying like $1525 Canadian with taxes and I'm getting all that plus a free printer/scanner! I'm stoked and I think I came off with a pretty sweet deal. So leave me a list of games to play. The first time I'm installing is Starcraft and Diablo 2

    WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Damn, I want that HD. The 3200+ isn't that low... It's pretty good actually.

Funny that, i just got a new laptop. Well, got it two weeks ago, but then had to go away for work so havn't had a chance to realy use it or be here

Its the Sony VGNS48GPB which you can see here:

    sony.com.au

Just scroll to the bottom on the right pane and choose the bottom most one.

its a VAIO Pentium M 760 2.0GHz with 1 gig ram, 802.11g, DVD burner, etc.

Its bloody nice, but still not good enough for BF2

The unfortuante part is I don't have the $3000 canadian for a laptop that could compare with this desktop.

And I was talking about the 2.0 GHz being low. Isn't 3.2 GHz standard now in most Sony's?

(not that this computer is a sony...)

nah, they switched to the mobility chips (thats what the M is for), centrino. They run at a lower Ghz to keep it cooler and remove the need for active cooling (though i suspect there is still a fan, just can't hear it).

My partner has the top of the line sony from two years back, that was a P4 something or other which is too bloody hot and has a fan that is extreamly noisey. Thats why they changed i think.

Speed wise, i find it as fast as my AMD Athlon 64 3Ghz desktop. I think the big different would be areas that most people on desktops dont stress. if i was doing rendering i reckon i would notice the performance drop, but so far everything has been as fast as my desktop if not faster.

oh, i havn't tired out the gfx card, which is actualy a x600 mobility I have a x800xt in my desktop. will be interesting to see how it performs.

Btw, i recommend the Philips over the BenQ, same performance and price (8ms) but the Philips has a nice black bezel and i suspect a better build quality.

oh didn't notice, your going for the 12ms. not sure what philips have to compete in that speed range. I paid 750 AUD for the Philips, i think the 12ms here was around 300/400 range... not sure what that is in Canadian...

Well, I was originally looking at a Samsung - 600:1 contrast ration, 8ms, digital input. That was $400 canadian for the 17".
