litestep is really the only decent one out there, in my oppinion. but i wouldn't recommend it, i'd just use the uxtheme.dll hack and change explorer's skin. litestep is a simple enough install and uninstall, but configuring it properly is a bitch. i always fall for it, and all spend 2 days trying to get it to work then get pissed off and trash it...everytime!

hmmm just use linux, then you have a wide range of choies, though bash seems to be the most popular now a days, i grew up with the bourne shell and then used the korn shell which i prefure.
As for windows, well i've played around with linux shells and end up not using them. get worried about all these other shells due to stability issues.
but are you talking about a command shell or are you talking about a tool to change the entire gui interface?
-
YEAH what he said, wtf is a shell??

ahh... gui... well quite a few good commercial ones, which i have played with over the years. but every single one i have tried normaly results in stability and compatibility issues.
Also the other issue is the increased memory drain, which can affect performance of software like games, Photoshop CS:2, Maya, etc.
As for linux, i tend towards Gnome, but KDE is okay.

A software interface between the user and the computer's operating system. The shell interprets commands entered by the user, and passes them on to the operating system. DOS shells are COMMAND.COM and DOS shell; some UNIX shells are the Bourne shell (sh), the C shell (csh), and the Korn shell (ksh).
However, BFG is reffering to the Explorer.exe shell, which is the gui shell. It gives you all the functionality you've grown accustomed to with your windows box's. Right click menus, drag and drop, icons, desktop, wallpapers, windows, and everything else you see.
BFG,
You're better off just using the Uxtheme.dll hack if all you want is to change the look. It's free, it's fast, and it has 0 footprint so you won't be bogging your system down at all. All it does is unlock the ability of windows xp to be skinnable. download the installer here.
Metal,
Yuck! Gnome! KDE3+ eats gnome for breakfast.

Thanks alot 43.
I got a problem. I hate sp2. Do i have to have it, to use the hack?
-
i know, i used windows blinds it's easy and i made my own skin on photoshop but i think what bfg is looking for is more command shells or someting... like the way you use windows now well mac has a different shell in that the commands are different... and is the Uxtheme.dll any easier or just better interface? it sounds interesting and i want to try out new things.. my linux redcap is ok but i have grown tired of it and want something new to fiddle around with....
