i think it can be RAM, tm. virtual memory, or your processor has too high temperature, download program called "Speedfan" it will show oyu temperatures, and if some is high you need new ventilator, i had the same problem, just it was when i play some game or watch film...

hmm... This only happens when you attempt to do something with your CDROM drive?
Ripping music is the same as just reading from the drive. While obviously burning is a lot different.
What OS are you running?
If this is a new problem (as in you have been able to rip/burn and all of a sudden it started stuffing up) then I beleive you have a hardware fault.
If you have always had this problem, then most likely a driver fault (specialy if your not running XP).
If you have changed hardware recently its possible you have an irq conflict.
Hardware related issues can be caused by the IDE cable from your drive to your MB, your MB or your cd rom drive.
Considering the price of a new CDROM drive (bugger all), then I would suggest buying a new burner and seeing if that corrects the problem.

128 mb's of ram is actually just fine to run XP. I have a system with XP PRO that has only 64 mb ram.
Its shouldn't be your ram.
Have your tried restoring your computer to earlier date? Have rolled back recently installed drivers? Have you virus/adware scanned?

have you thrown it out of your window recently, cos it might have unplugged itself cos mine does , re-install drivers to the time before this started happening is my solution

is it restarting as soon as u put the cd in or does the buffer get up first?

Is it just with the cd? I had a burnt out stick of ram which loaded xp fine but anything extra running it locked up... but other than that I'd asume your ram's fine, ripping should take up that much memory... I don't know... metalskin has a link to a memory test page :( I lost it...
