What exactly are they and what do you use them for? Sry, I'm a newb X_X
Precut images of people, objects, or anything cartoons. It's just something that is cut out of an image so people like us don't have to cut it out our selfs. For example

This is a render the bg is cut out and just the character is left.

What Toshiyan showed you is only one definition of a render in the GFX community.
Renders can also be:
-3D Models / Landscapes (This is referred to as 3D Rendering)
-A video or scene that has added effects (this is referred to as Video Rendering)
Ahh yes :) I was only thinking of the common one's though I considers 3D models in the same class <_<. :P
