Channels Saving

So.... i was messing with the channels tab, next to layers, and the black and white looks a lot better there then just from desaturating, but I can't figure out how to save it so the channels stay. Once i save it it just goes back to the color version. If you need s/s's to know what i'm talking about let me know.

select the channel you want, select all, copy, make a new layer, paste

least i think that's what you're asking for
