First rather big piece I've done. I'm still rather new to the painting thing. This is a self portrait of myself with only 4 color values.

not bad.
let me guess, you took a picture of yourself put it into photoshop and used the cutout filter then used that as your reference?
pretty cool.
some parts could use more definition, but it looks good.
for the way you did it, you coulda at least used better colors.
Not great imo.. i dunno, id be impressed if you hadnt used the computer to do all the work for you - its one of the hardest things to draw a self portrait, because the slightest difference can ruin it.
I have mixed feelings about how you accomplished this effect.
1) Art is art is art. Doesn't matter how you made it, it's art.
2) You cheated...
Which comes down to this; what does this style and technique say about you. If you're trying to say that you are a digital boy in a digital world and your life revolves around the computer (none of this is a bad thing, just a statement) then you hit the nail on the head. If you did it to just save time then you're really missing the whole point of a self portrait.
Technically this painting is solid, although you could have put more emphasis on the eyes (the "soul" of any self portrait). From a purely art opinion standpoint, I think you've squeaked by using the easiest and fastest method you could think of.
Again, none of this is to say that your painting is bad. It's not, it's probably in fact good. But you need to consider the message you are trying to send and the message that you have inevitably sent.
I didn't do it that way to save time, I did it that way because that's the way I felt to do it. I'm not an amazing painter (you can see my lines are horrible) nor can I draw for the life of me. I did it this way and it came out a success and I was surprised I actually did something nice for once.
As for the color. It was supposed to be orange. As you can see, that didn't work out too well.
anything you do in art is all a learning experience. when i first learned to draw when i was young i use to trace, because it helped me get used to lines and curves and shading, it taught me alot, mostly cuz i never took lessons, and that was my way of learning. the best advice i can give a fellow artist is, KEEP practicing, keep painting, keep drawing, and remember you can always start over, and you can always erase pencil.
