My smudge tool is defective. O.o

I tried Ilovecohead's sig tut and now your's. Both things don't turn out the same. I have smudge tool, on Ilovecoheads, the settings were fine. Again with yours. But it doesn't come out correctly. Is there something else I need to do?

I am using the trial of CS3. >.>

I tried following this but got lost at some parts cause of my lack of smudge awareness I haven't used smudge till now...I added some stuff cause my outcome was nothing like yours and I got this

I just can't get this smudge to work

word of advice try not to make it too heavy

and NEVER. EVER. have the light source in the corner if it is possible for it not to be.
