I'd have to say the former most of the time for me. There are so many works that I have hidden away in the depths of my harddrive because I didn't think they were any good. I shoot down most of my things before anyone else has a chance to do it.
Both actually for me. At times I adore my sigs and at others I hate them O.o
Show 'em ALWAYS!!! You shouldn't care if the community likes em or not! There is no way to get better if you don't show your stuff. Maybe even send PSD's to people let them fix em, and have them tell you what they did! You've got nothing to lose dude.

Its both for me... But probally biggest critic. Most of my work I don't like. Then at times I'm a hell load proud of what I made :P
But I don't care what people think... who cares if I suck. Its not a competition. I do it cause I enjoy it and have fun :)
