I think the both need a pixel border, the avatar's text I'm guessing is to big or doesn't stand out enough from the picture so it sorta makes the avatar unclear. The girl in the sig needs her arm to be blended more it's jagged like a cut out, and you nick at the top right is cut off.
I do like how you made the girl have a double effect though :P

Um since you have a white background couldn't you have left it the way it was? Is this the picture you used? You could use the original for the background layer and then use the magic wond tool at tolerance 32 and it will cut her out almost perfectly.
