Small and what i see basic problem

I got a problem. Im new on photoshop and im noob.. Im usin' Cs3. The problem is: When im making a new background.. And doing for example a gradient circle on it. Then when i try to paste / draw on my render. The Photoshop wanna start it all as a new " Project " So my old background get's overcopyed and now the render is the background. Please help me.


not sure how but heard maybe " open as canvas " can help. But im new and not got much of a clue about this, Cheers.
