It's actually quite good for a first.
I'm really liking the colours of the background and the effects, but you need to make the focal more clear.
Try and use some lighting right on the sprite so that it's easier to see.
It would also be really cool to see if you could get the background to follow the flow of the arm coming down, like a whirlwind after he punches? :P
That would be neat!
