my dads boss has just had a website made for his forklift sales buisness and he wants his site to be the first to come up when somebody types forklifts or something like that. how can he get this to happen without paying?

That's called SEO or search engine optimization, and he would need to pay for it to be done right. But you can experiment yourself, although the result can be drastically different if you aren't used to working with it. It's best if you research the subject before you do any real work.

Google also provides a wide variety of resource sites to choose from. SM just seems to be the best.
To answer your question, there is no simple solution. Just planting a couple meta tags in your pages isn't going to give you the #1 google ranking you want.

some of the tools and tutorials on there are useful because they actually check your site the same way as a google spider bot would and therefore makes you able to change your code to get the best possible results.
