maniping I find is all about slowly learning yourself with each piece you will learn something new.

I can see the problems you had with the water. A easy way to sort this would be to get another water stock or one of the water stocks you have already and very gently white brush a new layer and use the water stock on a clipping mask. To then blend this layer use a cloud smudge brush on DA and smudge over your white brush layer till it blends. Dont be afraid then also to have another layer set to softlight and then add either whites or blacks where needed.

I love the idea of the sun and the moon. Very nice manip mate and a start of something great.
