How do the Olympics allow a "host nation to showcase itself on a world stage"?
Well by allowing any nation to host the Olympics, it automatically gives that nation a sort of "advertisement." They give the host nation and opportunity such as this by televising the Olympics. Every nation across the globe watches the Olympics with hopes that their nation will accomplish a goal. So the host nation showcases itself because every other nation is watching the Olympics knowing that it is being held in Canada.
