IMO there ugly shit.
Other than that great use of c4ds.
Also has great flow.

The background doesn't suit the render overall, if you know what I mean.

Hah i understand why you say that, its only because its on a small canvas. if it were thinner and longer that type of border would look good. but i agree with you stick with a 1 px border for smaller tags :)

effects need work on, and lighting as well as depth.
Keep at it thought man you'll catch on :)

The BG lacks some texture. Also, blending needs some work on. I really like the flow man. My main issue is the color scheme of your effects. They are too colorful and don't provide a consistent spectrum to clash good with the focal. The effects are too soft as well and need some harshin'. I like the lighting. Work on a bit more. Work on your color scheme. Keep at it!
