The signature I am using now is probably in my top 5, and the rest aren't all THAT much better.
My current sig is one of the very few I like that haven't been made from a tutorial, and I feel that it could be better.
So, where should I start? lighting? focus? color correction? I see that I have a long way to go, but I'm not sure where to start

i would start with simply choosing a better stock
this is obviously from a a game?
and you can see that its all pixely
its over sharp on top of that
Learn about learning that could further your improvement
Like the Effects though
Good job :)

It's not a proper render: it's just a snapshot from a game with one of the worst texturing and shading of all 2008 games. I actually had to do most of the lighting myself.
Oh well. I love the game, even if the graphics suck.
Anyway, other than renders and stocks, what else am I lacking in?

I agree with the stock choiche, But we did that.
When I started doing Photoshop I was following tuts for like 6months. It's basically the only way to quick increase your skills. And discover your talent.
And remember: it's not about what is done, But what is created

Ah. So tutorials are the way to go?
I've personally felt that PSD releases are more useful than written tutorials, but I'll take your word for it.
One of my primary issues would be finding a clean render with at least a little bit of flow. That, and I can really do one or two styles.
I've been registered there for about a month now, and I've yet to use any of the renders there.

Theres a lot of resource packs on this site aswell, tools are required for great outcomes :P I've downloaded a lot of packs and find myself having lots and lots of stocks renders c4d's for whatever I need.
I also used 4chan's wallpaper forum to get a lot of pics, the ones that aren't porn and the alternative ones are really quite helpful for backdrops.
