you heading in the right direction with the squares however you might want to go with a vectored style which will make your life easier for what you have in mind.
The use of shapes to create art as a matter of fact my coke can is a vector. A better example would be this piece http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&se...piece#/d1m72zh. And this sig i made a long time ago, may not be good but its a good example. There are alot of vector brushes that you can find on deviantart.com.

This image is getting similar to your sig as you can see it's clean and free of extra effects. Shapes are sharp, items are easily identifiable and the colours are rich and solid without too much variation.
However that's not really a true 8 bit image, but more vector arts
This is an 8 bit image should look like (might even be 32 or 16 bit):

Notice the real simplicity and how it's actually pixelart? This is because 8 bit doesn't refer to an art style, but the amount of data that is used to create an image. Old PCs were very limited and could only display a very limited amount of colour. As technology got better, the bit rate increased to 16 and we had consoles like the SEGA Megadrive. Following that we had the Nintendo 64, which was one of the first 64 bit systems.
Now days we are up to 256 bits and higher so we are able to display even more colours on a screen.
It's a bit technical for me to go into and I haven't read up on the details lately, but hopefully the next image will help.

With all that said and done, how do we have an 8 bit artwork?
Well, have a look at the iPhone game by Linkin Park

Notice how the surrounding image is detailed, but extremely clean, yet the focal area still uses an 8 bit style. In theory, they've cheated a bit by creating an 8 bit feeling, but have used modern arts to compliment it.
Dunno how helpful I was but the trick is to understand what 8 bit info is and go from there. :p
