seems like there is too much contrast

Lowering the contrast would make it more visible as a black and white, trying playing with some exposure and curves layers as well.

As stated above, there is too much contrast.

Also, because of the contrast, it's hard to determine what the focal is.
Lighting is okay as it is, but could use some work.
