I love getting inspired by other people too.
This is a legit stab at it. Although I'm no smudge pro, I can see what you tried here.
next time, try playing around with the brush settings and strength of the smudge to create more detail.
Your lighting is well done, and the render does fit in quite nicely.
Keep it up!

and try to make it brighter and more contrast on it...
too much blur also
