TUNOSHNA, Russia — A Russian jet carrying a top ice hockey team crashed just after takeoff Wednesday, killing at least 43 people and leaving two others critically injured, officials said. It was one of the worst plane crashes ever involving a sports team.
Karlis Skrastins, a defenseman who played two seasons with the Dallas Stars, died in the crash, a Latvian official confirmed. Skrastins, 37, spent the last two seasons of his 11-year NHL career with the Stars and played in the last three Olympics for his native Latvia. He set an NHL record for most consecutive games played by a defenseman when he appeared in 495 straight games from Feb. 21, 2000 to Feb. 24, 2007. He entered the league with Nashville in 1998 and also played for Colorado and Florida before signing with Dallas on July 2, 2009.

Maris Strombergs is content being the only men's BMX champion in Olympic history.
The rider from Latvia defended his title Friday, taking the lead out of the starting gate and never relinquishing it. He cruised across the finish line in 37.576
seconds to add to the gold medal he won four years ago in Beijing, when the white knuckle sport made its Olympic debut.
Strombergs was chased the entire way by Australian rider Sam Willoughby, the world champion, who held on for the silver medal. Carlos Mario Oquendo Zabala made it a
banner afternoon for Colombia with his bronze, adding to teammate Mariana Pajon's gold in the women's race.
Strombergs wasn't considered among the favorites coming into the Olympics, despite a resume that includes two world championships.
