i was given permission to use this photo from Febrilis on deviantart.com. but i don't think i did it justice though. -.-

You need to either smudge with smaller brushes for more detail and then maybe add a few things to spice it up, or use the smudge you have as a background and start building from there. Anyway it looks like a tag that's in the begin stages and has quite a way to go to the finish.
