Ram

Ok I bought a second stick of 512mb ram... It's compatitable with the other stick, the computer picks it up fine but it makes the computer quite unstable & restarts all the time... my motherboard should be able to handle 2gb of ram.

So does anyone know the problem?

cud just be a motherboard incompatability..sum Mb's are funny with ram ..so although the 2 sticks are ok together the Mb mite not be happy ..try swappin the ram in the slots..sumtimes works.. if not im not sure.i'll hav a word with sum peeps n see if they can help

Update all your hardware drivers. Never know, and it can never hurt.

You wanna check that the memory is okay, for both sticks. You would be suprised how easy it is to stuff up memory or for a shop to sell memory that is damaged.

Have a gander at http://www.memtest86.com/. Its the best testing software out there, and will confirm if you have any memory problems.

Also note that memory now a days have a tonne of settings in the bios. You may wanna check out what type of memory both sticks are and how best to set your bios settings for em.

Metal's right, that memtest will take awhile though, so you may want to do it overnight. A stick of bad memory can send your system into convulsions.

i had the same problem, come to find out i had 2 different sticks of ram in my tower. and my luck, the 1 i bought didnt run with the one that came in the computer. so also make sure the 2 sticks of ram u have, can run together. just go to where u bought the stick, and ask them if its good

I thought that was only if the RAM was dual channel or something. I was under the impression that it had to be compatible with your motherboard, and not the other stick.

Just trying to get my facts straight :)

Depends on your Mobo. On some systems different brands of memory could cause problems, never understood why, but it was the case. Though i thought now a days it wasn't a problem. In theory if your mb supports it you should be fine, but its always best to have both sticks the same if you can.

Reply with what happens, I'm curious as to what was wrong if it was a bad stick or motherboard/software/hardware compatibility.
