Yes, WWII made the US and the Soviet Union the two biggest military and economic superpowers. The reason being afterwards, supply was low and demand was high so even though there was inflation, people want to spend as much as possible. The economy really flourished because of WWII. Thats true, but you can't say that we went to war for an economic gain and we justified the war by blowing up part of the pentagon and two of the world's most important economic buildings. The buildings' destruction hurt us a lot. Consumers' confidence and demand dropped severely and the stock market also took a plunge. Add that to the cost of war (even though thus far, this is the cheapest war we've fought in) and those economic damages will outweigh any gain we get from the war. We did not stage 911 and we did not go to war for economic gain.
