You can live a perfectly happy and fulfilling life without going to college/univerisity. But having a degree opens up alot more opportunities.
I personally think post-secondary education is important, having a degree showcases a variety of abilities like Metalskin had said.
I'm not sure because i never read the previous few posts completely but what metal skin said about getting turned down a job because he didn't have sufficient qualifiations (like grades of whatever) well some people believe that you need certain grades to get a job except some people don't have the opurtunity to get those grades yet they're smart enough so they still won't get the job they wish to have due to the fact that they can't.. sometimes it's better to have a college educatin even for the fact that you just went to college not that you have the ability of a college student in the first place.
I think people can still be totally successful without college. I know of many people who did it - and truthfully I don't even think I need college to be successful.
College can be important. But I think modern society puts way too much emphasis on it. I'm living with a bunch of college kids, just off campus. College is great for networking, but the work isn't as amazing difficult as it's made out to be.
I really feel that highschool's need to step it up. Public school now is all about "trying" if you try to pass then you will. It doesn't matter if you're too fat to run a mile or too stupid to understand Hamlet, as long as the teacher sees you put forth effort you're passed. I think that's horrible and completely against the idea of education. Not everyone is smart enough to make it in the real world, and they shouldn't be shuffled through highschool with false hopes.
Bush's "no child left behind" act is exactly what this country DOESN'T need. He's not making the students smarter, he's making the school system bend over backwards to accomodate for the dumb ass kids that don't feel like studying to make it. Ridicolous.
I agree Fully with 43. No need for schools to do that. In my school the upper more advanced classes are being cut for more "dumb-kid" classes. This isn't accetable.
But yes college is needed. Tho it matters who you know more then anything else. If you don't have connections, your screwed.
