Spyware is software that is put on your computer when you goto a website with spyware. Spyware slows down a computer, usses resources and damages the pc's data and hardware. It is suggested to use a spyware cleaner every 6-8 days. Using firefox does hepl in the prevention of spyware. IE has very little protection and allows popups and spyware.

IMO, you should NEVER get popups-blocker just to BLOCK the popups. What you should do is to get GOOD Adwares cleaners. Yeah, Ad-aware is really good, I uses it too. BTW, I used to have both Ad-aware and Spyware Search & Destroy. What I did was run one of the programs first, followed by the other. Everytime they would get different results. Like, Spyware would have infected files scanned that Ad-aware didn't. Might be a good idea to get more than one, just in case. =D

Some may say this is offtopic, but if your goal is to protect from viruses, trojans and adaware/spywhere then i think its important.
Some of the best protection you can have is a NAT - Network Address Translation. If you have cable or xDSL then between the modem and your puter you can put a little switch/router. The router side connects to the internet via your modem for you and gets the 'internet' ip address. It uses DHCP (or you can do manual allocation) to assign ip's to each computer that is connected to the switch side of it.
When you browse the internet, your request goes to the router as your local ip addy, and it translates that to the internet ip addy. incomming data is checked to see who it belongs to and the data passed to the internal ip addy thats appropriate.
Biggest advantage of this is that port scanning is useless. Viruses that port scan to find systems with holes will not be able to target you, unless its targeting a specific vunrability with your router/switch (which is very rare).
In addition you should use firefox instead of IE. If you wish to use IE then dont go to p0rn sites and especialy dont go to crack sites. dont install toolbars or smiley faces packs and ignore popups that say you have a virus or a vunrability or say your system time is wrong.
Do install WinXP service pack 2, IE has a popup blocker and a couple of other features which reduces the changes of some problems.
Dont download and install unknown software (ie. cracked software or cracks, etc) from an unknown source.
If you follow the above you dont realy need anti-virus software, and anti adware isn't realy required if you avoid IE.
