You don't always have to see all the tones. What makes a portrait and lighting good hasn't much to do with how much detail in the skin there is. But perhaps you have used a little too much contrast. His eye and hair is a little too dark.

Yeah, thats more what I meant. The contrast between his skin and his hair just distracts me, and I cant focus properly on the portrait.
