There's nothing wrong with simplicity, but the feeling of emptiness I get from that image is huge, and won't be good for a website, although it could be good for actual art stuff.
I wouldn't want to browse that site, not even read anything, because it gives a boring feeling.
Take a look at most successfull websites, even small ones like portfolios, they don't use too many dark colors, high contrast and over-smoothness you'd expect to see in an image, because that drives people away from the site...
A few clicks and people would leave the portfolio. Instead, make it look larger by using brighter colors and such...
That's what I can say atm.
