very nice I like the birds now
The new wings do look better. The problem with the birds though is that their symmetry in shadows and highlights would only make sense if the lighting was also symmetrical and centered between the birds, which isn't the case. That's why it doesn't look realistic, and won't, as long as the same unmodified image is used for both.
Honestly, I think for a real calendar, you could get rid of the birds and calendar there. Use that image for the top of the fold, and the dates below the fold. And that could be a great looking twelve months--manipulations of the names themed for the particular month.
