They could shut the internet down. Have all isp's turn of their service. I would work but never happen, impossible. I love the internet. It allows me to see a world of people that are able to function eithout even knowing eahcothers real names! It's great, no discrimnation and redicule. I disagree about porn, if you want it take it. If we didnt have internet porn we would have more advertisemnt on tv about pron, instead of pop ups.
theoretically it's possible to do it, at least handle a large chunk of the internet traffic. Remember, the entire internet is built off of DARPANET, the main pipeline which runs across the US. DARPA is a government controlled organization. But the amount of resources it would take to filter all that shit... it would be insane. Besides where's the line to be drawn between physical laws and digital ones. The DMCA made and attempt at it, and screwed it up horribly I might add. Parent's just need to be more vigilante of what their children are doing. "oh but I can't be there 24/7"...so get a router and block the sites, or only allow access to certain sites. It's ridicolous, people don't understand the technology so they vote to have it all blocked off. It's the same way with everything else, if you don't understand it...kill it, it's the human way. I think you should have to pass a test before you're allowed to have internet access, the same way they test you for a drivers liscence. If I hear "the internet is real slow" I'll bash someone with a keyboard. The internet isn't slow, you're computer's slow...because you downloaded every pop-up that you saw for the past 9 months. ugh. I hate technology in the hands of the incopetent.

Wouldn't work. Remember, the internet wasn't started by ISP's. It was started by colleges. Colleges who had strung together networks between nearby schools. That's all the internet is, a series of networks and DNS's. A friend and I were talking about setting up a little WAN of our own, wirelessly. If the internet ever did get shut down, it'd spawn back up again through pirate WAN's all across the country.

hmm... censorship is a daily part of our lives, yet we tend to forget about it.
We have censorship in terms of what is suitible to be displayed on tv at certain times of the day. during prime time when kids are up, certain types of violence and sexual activity is not allowed.
At Newsagencies there are laws about how sexualy explicit magazines can be displayed.
Adult entertainment venues have rules about how they can advertise, what hours they can open and how much of the inside of the club can be seen from outside.
Types of sexual activity is censored from movies, tv shows, ads.
Types of swear words are censored.
We live in a censored society, and emotive subjects like Child Pornography, Rape Porn, Snuff films all press towards control of what is accessable to individuals.
Personaly I think most types of censorship for the net will be untenable, though i do beleive that people who sell porn have a responsibility to confirm that only adults are viewing their merchandise.
Of course this is hard cause credit cards are abused and can be used by any age group. i think eventualy a form of electronic id that is 90% fullproof will be developed which will be rolled out and used to contol access to types of content on line. this in itself is censorship, but i think it is needed.

I don't know if you guys already know this or not, but the internet as it is right it is already censored to some extent. Peacefire.org has several articles about this, but I'll have to link to them later when I can shut down my dad's firewall (It blocks Peacefire, which is a total bullshit call. Just sent them a hatefull e-mail about it.
