Was on camera flash used by any chance?
The way the photo is exposed makes it appear that way. On camera flash can make a really flat photo if you aren't careful.
EDIT:
saw that theres no flash used. Strange, did you add those highlights in photoshop then? I'd reduce them to make him fit more naturally with the rest of the image.

It's way too heavily processed; as well as the airbrushing making the kid look blobby and jelly-like, the haloing around the person and the flat, greyed out background take away from the image a lot. You've made it look like you've taken a photo of a kid in bright sunny weather then photoshopped it onto a dull snowy dusk-light stock photo. I'm sure the original is much more appealing.

lol yeah i added the photoshop highlights. too much though like i said before. I plan on knocking it down a bit.
