I followed it for a little bit then did some things to it

Great tut, and I'm trying to make something of it, only I don't even know how to subtract the render from the black back ground, please help! (beginner speaking)

If it's a black background you might have imported it wrong, if you get a render dont copy/paste or drag it into photoshop, save it to your computer and then open it in photoshop, it should have a transparent background. If not perhaps try the "Magic eraser tool" you can select the tool by holding down your left mousebutton whilst clicking the eraser tool... there should be a dropdown menu if you do.
