But rap is not poetry to me because it relies on the music more than the words, and poetry is all about the words. If you tried to sell a "rap poetry book" with the lyrics of like the 20 most popular rap songs, no one would buy it. Because the lyrics are actually really quite bad and unpoetical, but they sound good alongside the music. Poetry sounds nice on it's own, poetry is all about the words and the images they create. You shouldn't need to sing it, or back it up with a beat, or change the ending on certain words in order to create poetry. =D

I dunno, I don't listen to rap, sometimes it comes on the radio. It's just blah and silly words. I was thinking of writing a rap song about unicorns but I think that's a bad idea.

Fair enough, however I believe that rap is poetry as well and while mainstream rap may certainly be disgusting, as well as some underground too, one shouldn't really try to miss the message a rap may convey just because it has a beat to it. To me, poems are about conveying an image through words, just like you think and if I had to think, there are rap songs out there that can convey such images. For instance, in his post-humous album Tupac's song Changes convey many images in my head and it sends such a clear non-abstract message, different from what many mainstream artists do nowadays. If I were to categorize the song as a poem, I would say Changes is probably the most poetic rap song I have ever heard. I could understand why you find rap distateful but at least don't put it all in one basket. I'm no rap-pro person, however I could direct you to a few, granted a small amount, of rap artists whom you may find more likeable than others. However I will digress that A LOT of rappers rap about the same thing nowadays... or was it always so? I wonder.
