This is actually how I started also, but I, at least, tried many other things before I posted every damn sig..
Try learning layers. This will make your job a TON easier. Also, try placing brushes in different spots, not only on the render itself, but also behind him and corners.. But remember, don't over-do-it. Re-size your render to your desired size by pressing CTRL+T and then holding SHIFT button drag any point that is on the diagonal.. Remember, you can move your render if you can't find the point to drag.
Now, what I would suggest to you is finding some tutorials that explain a lot about basic things, for example, flow, lighting, depth, effects and stuff like that. Try finding what you really think looks good. Eventually, you will get the taste and other will start finding your works sexier than they are now.
It's not obligate to use C4Ds on every sig. That's just optional.. Basically, everything is optional. :D You can make some good sigs without the use of C4Ds.
Also, if this looks nice to you, sorry to tell, but we all know we have to start somewhere.. And when we start, we can't really be good.. Everything in life comes with a lot practice, right? So, keep practicing.
Hope I helped. Bow.
