Ultima Online ;) . www.uodemise.com. That is where I play. Completely free, and approved by the guys who made the game. So there really isn't anything to lose to try it out ;) . We have about 250 playing if not more. Sometimes around 320...
Oh, and Battlefield 2 is pretty sweet.

Well it depends on what games you wanna play
MMORPGs I highly recommend WoW, so long as you don't mind spending, Guild Wars otherwise
FPS-Call of Duty, Battlefield 2, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, some people enjoy Unreal Tournament (I don't)
RTS-Civilization, Warcraft 3, Rome: Total War (I HIGHLY recommend this game), Empire Earth 2, and Black and White 2 is coming out soon, should be an awesome game.
Sims-Evil Genius, Sim City 4, Children of the Nile (awesome game, at a budget price)
Yeah...definatly lots of other games out there, good gaming!
By the way, what is your comp, specs and stuff.
