About the finger overlapping problem:
If you set the character fade-out effect in multiple layers, and not all of it in one, I would Ctrl+Click the 2nd fade-out's layer (the biggest one) and go to Select->Modify->Expand and Expand by 1 px, now go to the layer holding the first fade layer and Ctrl+X to cut it.
See if it seems more naturally.
