i prefer rugby. granted american football must take some degree of skill to be able to play well, but it just doesnt seem like its that difficult. you run, you catch the ball, you run over a line and, presto! you score. but, its pure opinion, and, being australian and having never watched a real american football game, i am not really one to judge.
Dale you've got alot of incorrect information in your first post there. Especially that qoute by Sgt. Swabs where he says you can just through the ball foward in football. You can only through the ball foward if you're behind the line of scrimage, which is the point where the ball is hicked from.
Also, it seems people think because football players wear pads it's somehow less violent and aggressive. The thing you may not realize is that the only real padding is the helmet and the shoulder pads, which only really protect the person doing the tackling. I happened to live next door to a guy that plays both football and rugby for local leagues. I asked him about which is better. he told me this. "I have more fun with rugby, but football is way more violent." Think about it, even with all that padding players still regularly break arms, ankles, shoulders, noses (through a helmet!), and get concussions bad enough to cause brain damage.
Which is better...it's a personal choice. Rugby certainly seems more elagant. But if you're asking which one is more physically painful, Football wins hands down. Ask anyone that plays both sports seriously.

This whole debate reminds me of a friend of mine from whales. She couldn't figure out what the big deal was with baseball, it looked like cricket except they couldn't even hit the ball. That is, until we went to a game and she got to see that the pitcher throws the ball at 98mph (157kph) from only 18 meters away.
If it was as easy as you Europeans seem to think it is, it wouldn't be a nationally telivised sport.
So what.. i could post a link to this, loads of dodgy rugby tackles. This isn't about which sport is more violent, it's about which is better / takes more skill. NOT who is the bigger player, and who could beat the crap into any other player. .. .

This is just a perfect example of Europeans stereotyping americans as untalented and uneducated heathens. We have the worlds best olympics teams all-around. Obviously the talent and skill comes from somewhere. If you haven't played a league game of football then where are you getting your information from?
And I don't know how you can even consider comparing those rugby tackles to the football tackles. did you miss the part where a 300lbs man was tossed 4 ft into the air like a ragdoll, spun a full 360 degrees and was hit again? If you want me to find them, I know there's a handful videos online of football players snapping legs and arms like twigs, and those don't even make the "hardest hits reel" at the end of the season. Do you even know why they wear helmets? It's because before they had the helmets people were literally cracking there heads open like egg shells.

Snapping peoples arms and legs might be fun to watch but it doesn't make it the better sport to play imo lol. I'd like to play american football though, it does look fun.

You can't say those rugby tackles don't hurt though.
These are the faster, strongest, most athletic people in the world, and they're trying to out run, out muscle, and out think eachother for 4 quarters. I'd say that takes talent and skill.
