Hmm... Zork I, II and II, including Hitch Hickers guide to the Galaxy. They kicked off the game industry. Of course urouge as well, unix text based game.
Umm... Commander Keen was anoter biggie on the PC sceen, while Galaga and Space Invaders for uprights.
Wolfensteind broke open the concept of first person shooters and Doom just blew that world apart.
Modern wise I would haev to say Battlefield 1942 for a novel multiplayer concept that isn't just a 'run around maddly pick up a weapon and blow away everything that moves'.

Without doubt the greatest game ever! :D I used to take my little plastic gun and shoot them duckies dead! So much fun, they should remake it, gun and all, and add new things to it.
*hint hint any game developers* come to think of it, they should have done that for halo! :DBut for this day and age.... i would have to say ninja gaiden, Excellent game great story line,graphics and gameplay :D

I would have to go with the Starcraft series created by Blizzard. There has been very few computer games (that I believe) could match with this game in quality.
