The software world has become a mess of tiny monopolies. Basically, whichever company gets there first wins. Adobe created PDF, so what does everyone use...Adobe's pdf reader. Microsoft invented MS word file types, powerpoints, excel sheets. all of which can only be editted (reliably editted) by microsoft products. it's not about who's done it the best, it's about who got there first.
...like Apple and the iPod.
And yes, I agree that IE and Outlook Express are shitty programs, but there are alternatives. Don't bring down the whole OS just because of a few programs that are installed on it. Get rid of them and find something else.
And as far as Windows "babysitting" you, I think I would rather be babysat if I were a complete computer newbie than have to stare at this:

ummm That's the startup screen. and Most distros have an option where you can get rid of it and stare at a logo instead, just like booting windows.
I would quite happily stare at the penguin for hours on end. :)

I understand how windows can be a pain, especially WinXP. It was called "Let Daddy take care of it" but from MS it's know as user friendly.
The whole XP OS is made user friendly, it was suppose to get more people that have never used windows before to desire it more. With just a click of a button they could setup entire networks without any coding with more security than ever before. Easy to create your own business and enjoy entertainment.( Of course this takes away from it being so easy to modify but also makes it so outside users, "hackers" can't take advantage of it as easy. True if anyone has the knowledge the can get around anything but this is just a step for MS to easily stop them for if it does a system check it can see if all files are exactly the same as when installed. If you mod it, it will say there's an error in some sitiuations for you can go so far in changing it that windows doesn't recognize it and sees it as an opening for a hacker. So if you do that you have to change the windows registery system to allow it to default recognise your setup. So hopefully they make Vista OS a bit differently for more Advanced Users.
The whole thing for people who want to modify it and don't know everything about the OS say they have problems instaling new drives and such or unistalling all the windows basic programs like media player.
MS has intergrated this vary throughly for a reson, though I do understand why people do complain for I've needed to unistall programs such as these that have no uninstallation file or can't be found in other places easily. This is another defense that MS has made to help new user from being open virus that could simply knock out any of the basic programs that for new users are everything they do. So I bet MS was hoping that WinXP would be great for people who have never used a computer before or Windows and for programs to learn how to get around it.
I do understand the problems with Windows, I use Windows Media Center and that's because I'm still a newb. This OS has so many problems with other devices it's ridiculous. But it is great for someone who bought it just for spacifically what it was made to do but even at that other windows can do what this can and more.
Linux is great OS, so is a Mac. As BFG said it depends on the user. If you know a lot about your OS you can for one make it do anything you wish, even if it means change the whole OS or creating a program yourself to convert all files from another like Mac to Windows. Knowledge is power :P.

but windows is also slooooow... because you cant compile your programs, i got an AMD Dual Core (fisical) 4 core (logical) 64 bits. and obviously im runing linux on it, but a frind of mine told me, hey have you tried windows vista? i was like, man... i dont use windows at all :P but he convice me to install it.
windows vista minimum requirements are like HUUUGE. it ran ok, but not as fast as on linux, how come?
well windows its a preinstall OS. as you say, for ppl who is starting on computing (wich its ok) but its only ok, when you learn and then move on. but windows dont let you learn, thats why you keep buying windows.
and i dont like windows because its a bad OS, i mean, if they are bad making and OS its ok. but they make windows bad, so you keep buying the new releases.
they got virus because they SALE antivirus.
its like they own your ass. they make a virus called I LOVE U, and then they say.. hey people, dont be afraid, we found the cure!!!!... wich is 100 bucks.. o_O
and besides all that windows has TRUSTED COMPUTING!!! :S
thats my point of view, and im not criticizing any of you guys who like windows, because besides your computer likes i like you :P haha :P
